I would like to introduce you guys to Sumner local Liv Jefferis!
Liv is taking over my role as a content manager, as I am off to new adventures for a while and thought it will be too hard for me keeping up with all the happenings here in Sumner if I am not actually here… I have chosen Liv because she has that special something, the MAGIC! I know you will all love her!

Liv, tell us why you live in Sumner?
Living in Sumner is like constantly being on holiday! I love being able to jump on my long-board and check out the surf, or walk into the village for a bite to eat and a drink. I’m all about lifestyle and there is no better place for that than Sumner! Since the earthquakes I have really noticed how the Sumner community has pulled together, it is becoming such a positive place to be and one which I love being a part of and hope to become more integrated in through this role.

Surfing to me is…
An absolute obsession. I try and get out every day, even if it’s just for some paddle fitness. I fall asleep reliving every wave I have caught that day and constantly find myself daydreaming about it.

I know you are really into art and photography as well. Tell us about that…
I really enjoy photography, capturing awesome moments so that the memories of them never fade. I try and find a different angle for each shot and build in a creative aspect, as well as documenting the life around me. As well as that I love to be creative through cooking. I experiment with different ideas and recipes and even write a blog about what I have been up to in the kitchen.

What is it that inspires you in life?
So many things inspire me! The people around me who are all so passionate about different aspects of life really inspire me to pursue and develop my interests. I love that some people are so happy and yet have such a simple life. I try to take notice of the simple things and minimize stress and materialism by not focusing on money but more on eating well, surfing and being around the people I love.

You will be the new content manager for both the Sumner Village website & Facebook page! What can we expect? I hope to continue the awesome work Sabrina has done establishing and building both the website and Facebook page. I have some new ideas too so keep an eye out for new developments. I am hoping to start an open mic night as I have three very talented flatmates and I bet there are many more muso’s in Sumner who would love a chance to get together and play for a few people or just jam!

What do you love about Sumner?
Everything! The chilled out vibe, the lovely but temperamental NE swell, the community and friendly atmosphere. When you walk down the street everyone says “Hi”… where else does that happen?! Please feel free to stop me on the street and say hello and let me know of anything that the community or those coming into Sumner should know about! Thanks Sabrina for the amazing job you have done for Sumner Village!

Awww thank you so much Liv! I am very excited knowing I have found the perfect match in you… I am sure our readers and followers will enjoy having you involved. Sumner has got a very exciting future and I can’t wait to read about all the adventures you will be up to!!

Annie, I hear you are organizing a Sumner Long-boarder Club event early march. What is to celebrate?
We are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the club on the upcoming weekend of the 1st – 3rd March.

Who’s involved? And what is your part?
The whole of the Sumner Longboarders club have been involved in getting this going and there is a club committee sub group that have been focused on organising the event – I am part of that team. We have had fabulous support from local businesses supporting the Charity Art Auction and the weekend in general, the club is hugely grateful to Sadhana surfboards, Aumoana, Seventh Wave, Mainland Paints, the Headless Mexican, Signmark and Surfing Tribe for their awesome ongoing support.

What can we expect?
You can expect a great weekend, full of fun, good company and some serious fundraising for a really good cause – the Make-a- Wish New Zealand foundation on the Saturday night. Friday 1st March will be the Surfing Tribe & Sadhana Surfboards Surf Movie night at the Hollywood cinema starting at 7pm and $15 per person, Saturday 2nd March is the Seventhwave Charity Art Auction being held at the Ferrymead Golf Club ($20 per person) with all proceeds going to Make-a-Wish foundation and Sunday will be the Mainland Paints Old Mal team tag and BBQ from around 9am on Sunday 3rd March on Sumner Beach.

Can everyone come along, or do we have to be surfers?
We’d love to see some new faces and you don’t have to be surfers to attend. All are welcome but numbers are limited, with club members past and present already having registered for events so tickets are going fast. If you are keen to make sure you get a ticket, please email sumnerlongboarders@gmail.com or ring Pete on 027 250 0000.

Tell us more about the Art Auction….
The Seventhwave Charity art auction is a repeat of an event held 5 years ago where all items, typically but not exclusively surf or Sumner related, are made assembled and donated by the awesome local businesses named above and our club members. All proceeds from sales will be donated to the “Make-A-Wish New Zealand” to recognise the great work they do in bringing joy and happiness to young children living with life threatening illnesses. As a club we recently lost young Ruby Hollingworth aged 9 from our club circle to a rare condition and wanted to assist by whatever practical means we could. We’d love to see lots of people come along and enjoy the night while helping us achieve a really good contribution for the foundation. The band the “Hot Funky Mama”s are playing and the theme for the weekend is retro so no doubt there’ll be a few paisley’s and hawaiian shirts (always a favourite) in the mix as well.

A quick chat to one of the amazing coordinators…

Kath, you are part of the Sumner Street Party Committee, tell us how this came together…
The Street Party was an idea mooted around the table at one of our Sumner Business Group meetings, an event that would attract visitors back to the area and show off our unique seaside Village.
It was a ‘sure lets just throw a party’ kind of idea… none of us are event organizers and none of us had any idea how much time it would consume! But it is fun.

What can we expect on the day?
There will be live music, street performers, fashion shows, great food, boutique beers and wine and all the craft stalls down the street. There will be an art competition whereby the attendees can vote for the next art work to go up on a double height container on Wakefield Ave. We want to link to the beach this year with a Sand pit dig down by The Beach Bar…. Loads of stuff going on this year!

Can the kids come along?
Gosh yes, they should organize their parents and get along. There is a dedicated zone for little ones with the bouncy castle and kids stalls, and the teen zone outside Fuse.

Will there be prizes?
Loads, but you have to dig for them… with your feet! Should be a laugh.

You are doing this on a voluntary basis, why?
Because it got to the point of no return! No, its fun.. and I love Sumner, I want to see it flourish. Despite the crumbling cliffs, broken homes, containers and wonky road… I think we have something really unique here. Its sharing that love….ahhhhh.

Thank you Kath for your time! This will be an epic event not to be missed! Also a huge thank you to all sponsors and volunteers!

Sumner Art Window?

Nikki, you are filling an empty space with art. How did this come together?
I had been watching the exciting projects of Gap Filler around the city for a while and reflecting about how I could help contribute to the redevelopment of creative spaces in Christchurch post earthquake. My own community of Sumner has suffered a lot of physical and mental damage so really wanted to get something started there. My partner and I had often discussed the possibilities for 17 Marriner Street and kept an eagle eye on any sign of life within. We couldn’t help ourselves when the new owners Paul Grainger and Elsbeth Hird moved in. We became friends and realized that we shared a lot of the same interests – one being a passion for art. The idea for the Sumner Art Window was born after Paul offered me the space to exhibit my own work. This then got me thinking with my curator hat on, as to the real possibilities for the space for artists to exhibit. Robyn Webster, a well known CHCH artist, said ‘What are you waiting for, I’ll exhibit!’ and things went very quickly from there.

Tell us more about yourself, what inspires you?
I have a background in sculpture and trained in the UK. I moved to Sumner nine years ago with my then young children on a three year adventure. Since then I have had teaching jobs, worked for COCA (The Centre for Contemporary Art) and the CHCH arts Festival, run my own after school art club and developed a real love for the simple things in life. One of my favorite things to do is ride my vintage bike down to the village and cook using herbs and veggies from my small veggie plot. I am inspired by nature everyday and the passionate people of Christchurch who are helping to rebuild our city.

Who are the artists and how do they qualify?
At the moment the contemporary artist showing is Robyn Webster . She has created an installation piece that is based on a poem. The Sumner Art Window will show art from emerging and established Contemporary Artists using 2D media, film, photography, installation and sculpture. Open 24/7, exhibitions will change on a monthly basis encouraging visitors and locals to connect with a changing stream of artworks through the frame of a window.
Artists can contact sumnerartwindow@gmail.com in the first instance if they are interested in having an exhibition. A link to a website or youtube clip showing their work is useful, perhaps an outline of a proposal for the space (how they want to use it) and a CV can be helpful in determining if we are the right space to house their work.

Can people buy the artwork? And where?
The space is not for profit so noncommercial. People can buy the artwork by contacting the artist directly. Artists details are left in the window space.

How does the future of this project look like?
Good question….. At the moment the future possibilities are huge….We may even have months dedicated to film, performance art and dance as well as visual art. The main thing to remember is that the space has to dictate from the first instance what goes on in to it.

We’d love to know your Sumner insider tips! Your favorite places & spaces…
There are so many as I love living here…..My favorite places are the beach, Scarborough end where I can take my dog, watch the surfers and grab a coffee. The Hollywood Cinema where I can relax while still wearing my painting apron and ugg boots and no-one batts an eye lid! The hills behind my house where I can now walk again, the wonderful green area where the old community hall used to be (we so needed a green area in the village center), the second hand shop Time and Time again where I can sell my spontaneous, over zealous buys, the DVD shop where I can get movies out as I am not fond of TV and of course we have great eating houses and fish and chips helps too!

Thank you Nikki!
